    The ceremonial launch of this year’s version of the National Engineering and Technology exhibition was held at the Galle Face Hotel on Tuesday, 19th June, 2018 from 6.00 pm onwards. The exhibition is organized and conducted annually since year 1985 by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), the apex body for the engineering profession in the country and  is well known for bringing the latest in technologies, products, skills and best practices from around the world to its target audience during the 3 days it’s held.

    Techno Sri Lanka 2018 is to be held for its  33rd   consecutive year on 12th,13th and  14th October 2018 at the BMICH.  A large audience comprised of sponsors, special invitees, guests, well-wishers, past presidents, Council members, members of the organizing committee and IESL staff attended the launch event. Eng. Nihal Rupasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Region Development graced the occasion as the chief guest.

    The best of its kind to be held in Sri Lanka, this flagship event of the IESL is a much anticipated beacon among the industry as much as the public for the advent and  transfer of cutting edge technology towards scientific and technological excellence of the engineering profession and related industry in the country

    The ceremony commenced with the  lighting of the traditional Oil Lamp and national anthem and  was followed by President of IESL, Eng. (Prof.) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake’s welcome address.

    President Elect of IESL and Chairman of the Techno Sri Lanka 2018 Organizing Committee, Eng.(Prof.) T.M. Pallewatte in his introduction speech explained the idea behind selecting

    “ Engineering the Green Future” as the theme for this year’s exhibition and its aim to promote smart and sustainable development of the country while preserving earth’s resources for future generations.

    The Chief Guest, Eng. Nihal Rupasinghe, in his speech briefed on the variety of mega projects being undertaken by the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development mentioning the Light Rail, Port City, Colombo Flood Protection among other projects. He highlighted the fact that most of the work is not visible due to these being long term targeted towards the country reaching GDP level equivalent to USD 20,000 by year 2030. He assured the mostly industry representatives among the audience of the availability of work, especially for the construction sector, and predicted a bright future for the country and its people.

    Addressing the audience in what was tagged as the ‘Techno Talk’  Mr. Peter D’ Almeida, Managing Director, N-Able Pvt. Ltd made an enlightening and critical review of the theme of the exhibition and the vision and mission statements of the IESL. He pointed out that they should not be limited to mere words but should have active involvements and potential to inspire breakthroughs in the endeavor towards achieving their goals. Drawing several real-life  examples he emphasized the need for a complete rethink  by the institution  and its engineer members so that they will not miss out on the more important simpler things for the benefit of society by focusing on grandiose works. He underscored the importance of nurturing a mindset that promotes curiosity among younger generations and the dispersion of science and technology and benefits to reach out to the underserved.

    M/s Sri Lanka Telecom and M/s Mobitel (Pvt.) Ltd are the Principal Sponsors for the Techno Sri Lanka 2018. Speaking on behalf of  M/s Sri Lanka Telecom Eng.Rohana Ellawela, General Manager – Corporate relations, mentioned that the organization is the main sponsor of the exhibition for  the 20th consecutive year and proud to be associated with it. Mr. Rasantha Hettithanthirige - Senior General Manager speaking on behalf of M/s Mobitel (Pvt.) Ltd. expressed his happiness of being the main sponsor along with Sri Lanka Telecom for the 10th consecutive year and  added that the event has been and will continue to be  their most preferred platform for launching new generation products and services.

    The event was also the occasion to handover tokens of sponsorships for sponsors

    The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Deputy Chairman of the Techno Organizing Committee, Eng. (Prof.) D A R Dolage and this was followed by Cocktails with which the event concluded.

    The IESL Bak Maha Ulela 2018 was held at Ape Gama, Sri Jayawardenapura, Kotte on Saturday, 28th April, 2018 from 9.00am to 4.00pm. Refreshed by the  partaking of the symbolic  milk rice and  avurudu sweets – Kavum Kokis  the Bak Maha Ulela began with the  lighting of the oil lamp and  welcome address  by the IESL President, Eng. (Prof.) Mrs Niranjanie Ratnayake. From then on the day was filled with all the Fun and Games such as competitions for Bun eating, Hula hooping, Kotta pora, Kana Mutty, Lime & Spoon race, gunny bag race, musical chairs, etc. etc.  The Kamba Adilla competition drew much enthusiasm, as usual, among the more than 350 participants  comprised of IESL Members and families and staff.  The event was organized  by the Civil Engineering Sectional Committee of the IESL The IESL President, President Elect, Chairmen –current and past of the CESC, CEO and DES distributed the prizes sponsored by  Seylan  Bank.

    The Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) 2018, for selecting the cream of creative and innovative among Sri Lankan school children for participation in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2018 to be held in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA was conducted at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka on 19th February 2018. The Intel ISEF is where the best of world’s best young scientists and inventors from over 75 countries come together each year to share their ideas, showcase their cutting edge science and engineering projects and win awards and scholarships.

    The SLSEF is a joint effort where the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), National Science Foundation (NSF),   Ministry of Education & the Intel® EM Limited-Sri Lanka Liaison Office had joined hands since year 2007 to promote creativity and innovation among the country’s younger generation. Every year 20 competitors are selected from two separate competitions, the Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) competition conducted by the IESL and the Science Research Project Competition (SRPC) conducted by the NSF, to compete at the SLSEF to select three of the best among them to participate at an international level in the Intel ISEF held in USA.

    Since beginning to participate in the Intel ISEF, student of Sri Lanka, who has been selected through SLSEF competition has done the country proud by managing to win awards and recognition winning grands awards & special awards.

    Participants were welcomed by the President of IESL, Eng. (Prof.) Niranjanie Ratnayake. Addressing the participants to this year’s SLSEF the President pointed out the significant contributions JIY & SRPC programme are making to the students and the country providing motivation to be creative and innovative. Also Eng. Dayan Herath said that the SLSEF is being held for the tenth time and that the country has to be proud of the way its school children have performed in the face of international competition. He pointed out the exhaustive preliminary selection process undertaken by the IESL & NSF in selecting 20 finalists from the nearly 1500 school children projects demonstrated to panel of judges at Colombo and all the provinces. The three of these finalists will be nominated to the Intel ISEF 2018 he concluded.


    Master Liyanadura Supun Sasipriya Silva of De Mazenod College, Kandana, Master K M G Kavinda Bandara & K G Wijayawardana of St Anthony's College, Kandy & Master Master K R R Induwara of Ananda National School, Chilaw were selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Intel ISEF in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA in May 2018 from both competitions.

    IESL observed World Water Day 2018 with special programme of presentations by leadingl experts in the water sector making presentation to bring better understanding among people about importance of water. Organized by the IESL Water Forum its chairman, Dr. Kamal Laksiri welcoming the participants briefed  the audience about how the day came to be named by the United Nations as the world Water Day in the year 1993 and that that the water arm of the UN selects each year’s  theme which for this year is “ The Answer is in Nature”.

    President of IESL, Eng. (Prof.) Niranjanie Ratnayake addressing the audience stressed on the need to be alert and not rest on one’s laurels as regards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) of the United Nations by all countries of providing access to clean drinking water for all by year 2030. Fresh water resources being unequally spatially distributed,  time factor, pollution, climate change etc. pose serious challenge  and that solutions have to be sought based on nature to be sustainable she mentioned.

    Presentations made by experts from the sector were as follows:

    “Nature and Water” by Dr. Manthrithilaka, Head – Sri Lanka Development Initiative, International Water Management.

    “ Balancing of Water Resources Development and Conservation of Ecosystem” by Eng. (Mrs.)Badra Kamaladasa – Former Director General – Irrigation, Irrigation Department

    “Nature is the Teacher” by Eng. (Dr.) S.K. Weragoda, Project Director, China Sr Lanka Research Grant Project – Ministry of City Planning and Water Supply.

    “ Ground Water, Isotopes & CK Du “ by Eng. Viraj Edirisinghe – Director, Industrial Applications, Atomic Energy Board.

    “ Nature Based Solutions for Water from the perspective of Young Water Professionals “ by Eng. Chathura Sanjeewa – Civil and Environmental Engineer, National Water Supply and  Drainage Board


    The experts’ presentations were followed by an Open Discussion and Question & Answer session.

    IESL Women Engineers Forum marked the International Women’s day by holding The Women Engineers’ Day 2018 and the 09th Annual General Meeting on 16th of March 2018 from 3.30 pm onwards at Wimalasurendra Auditorium at IESL premises with the participation of women engineers representing industry as well as academia. The event was graced by several Eminent Personalities in the field of Engineering, Eng. Ms. Sri Widowati, The Country Director of Asian Development Bank for Sri Lanka as the Chief Guest and Dr. Achela K.Fernando, Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Griffith School of Engineering Brisbane, Queensland, Australia as the Guest Speaker.  They were joined by other distinguished guests, the first lady president of IESL Eng. (Ms.) Lanka Haturusingha, the current president of IESL Prof. Niranjanie Ratnayake, past chairpersons of IESL Women Engineers’ Forum, fellow women engineers of IESL and other distinguished invitees.

    Gathering was warmly welcomed by the outgoing chairperson of IESL Women Engineers Forum Eng. (Ms.) Mangala Wickramanayake.  The event was enlightened by the speech delivered by Eng. (Ms.) Sri Widowati on the topic “ADB Perspective on gender equality and women’s empowerment”. Her speech was enriched with the facts obtained from the studies done by ADB based on women in the Asian society and she shared her own experiences as a woman engineer from South East Asian region how she  climbed to the highest position in her carrier ladder successfully through consistent dedication while managing her balanced family life as well. The Guest Speaker for the day, Dr. Achela K. Fernando presented the “Outcome of the Women Engineers’ Survey” which was done in year 2017 by the IESL Women Engineers’ Forum with the participation of around 300 women engineers in Sri Lanka.


    Eng. (Prof) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake, the President of IESL addressed the gathering with recent statistical data of women in engineering. Recent female intake of the engineering faculty in University of Moratuwa is around 20% and she expressed that it is a significant growth in comparison to the situation few decades back.  Click Here for Women Engineers Day Photos

    Celebration of IESL Women Engineers’ Day 2018 was successfully concluded and   followed by the 09th Annual General Meeting from 5.30 pm onwards . Eng. (Ms.) Shyama Gunawardana was appointed as the new chairperson for the IESL Women Engineers’ Forum for the year 2018/2019 session and new appointments for Vice Chairperson and two joint Secretary Posts were received by Eng. (Ms.) Devika Abeysuriya, Eng. (Ms.) Lilani Ruhunage and Eng. (Ms.) Dulmini Indrasiri respectively. Eng.( Ms,) Tharangika Jayasundara was appointed as the Social Secretary and Eng. (Ms.)Sajani Thotagamuwa was  the Treasurer. IESL Women Engineers’ Forum enthusiastically waiting to serve the women engineers in Sri Lanka with more creative, inspirational and innovative thoughts for the year 2018/2019 session.

    The 114th  birth anniversary of Eng.(Prof.) Robert Haisington Paul was commemorated by the IESL on Friday, 9th February, 2018 at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the institution from 1715 hours.

    Prof. R.H.Paul is known as the Father of Electrical Engineering Education in Sri Lanka, for his vital role in the history of Development of Engineering Education in the country. The late Professor had been the President of the IESL in 1968,

    IAEA  Expert on Technical Cooperation and well known academic, Eng. (Dr.) Mahendra Prinath Dias, delivered the memorial  lecture on “ Global Warming: Are Advanced Nuclear Reactors a Possible Solution” to mark the event.

    The lighting of the traditional oil lamp and garlanding of the portrait of the late Professor by the President of the IESL, Eng. (Prof.) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake, preceded the delivery of the memorial oration.  IESL Council members,  Past Presidents and  relatives of the late professor participated in the ceremony. Those belonging to the profession from the industry and academia attended.
